America wastes more electricity than any other country. Our planet is dealing with really critical issues like pollution and the ozone layer depletion so it is critical that we do our best to not squander energy and, in turn, save our environment.
Today, we will talk about a couple of things that you and I can do to not simply save energy but save some money as well. There is nothing complex about what we will share with you but you must endeavor to do these things so you can help save planet Earth.
A simple thing you can do is to just turn off the lights when you exit a room. Most of us probably temporarily leave the living room lights turned on when we run to the kitchen to prepare some food because we believe we are going to return right away. If you do this even for only a couple of times every day, that is roughly 30 minutes of consumed electrical energy for just this one light. Even though it may not look like much, the sad truth is millions of people are doing the exact same thing every day. If you total the minutes for the year, that would be approximately 182 hours of electrical energy just for one light in one room for each person that does this. Let’s say that we really leave the lights on for approximately 182 hours every single year and let’s multiply that by one million people. That’s 182 million hours of energy consumed yearly coming from a light that is left switched on in a single room.
One other wasteful habit that many people do is turn the lights on when walking into a room. A lot of us do this automatically. I find myself doing this also. The problem is that most of the time, there is adequate light coming into a room. You are going to nonetheless walk in and turn the light on. And on top of that, because of the natural light coming in, we tend to forget we switched the room light on in the first place and leave it on for the rest of the day. You merely have to make the extra effort to not flip the lights on if there is adequate natural light coming in.
Another serious problem is people leaving things like television and radios switched on the whole day even if they are not in the same room. I holler at my mom whenever I visit and she has her television on but isn’t even watching it. Just imagine the amount of electrical energy being consumed. If you are not going to be in the room any longer and the telly is switched on, switch it off.
These are simply a few things that we all can do so easily but can have a great impact on our efforts to conserve electrical energy and to save our planet. It just takes a little effort on your part to remember these things, and when everyone makes a small effort, it can add up to make a massive difference.
